The House convenes on a Saturday (3rd April 1982) for only the fourth time that century following the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands. This is the debate on that situation. Audio courtesy Parliamentary Recording Unit (proceedings would not be video-recorded for another three years). I was supplied this in three files, so stitched them together at 53:55 and 1:56:42 (the noise changes at each stitch). Follow along in Hansard: https://api.parliament.uk /historic-hansard/lords/1982/apr/03/the-falkland-islands This debate is notable not only for its taking place on a Saturday, but also for the Foreign Secretary being a member of the House during a significant crisis. While not the last time a Foreign Secretary has been a member of the Lords (Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton has since followed Lord Carrington, and several other Lords have held ministerial positions since), this is probably the most recent significant event a Foreign Secretary has had to debate in the Lords. Note the generally much more serene atmosphere than that in the Commons. Both Lord Carrington and John Nott MP (Secretary of State for Defence) offered their resignations, but only Carrington's was accepted, which is slightly ironic considering the calls for Nott to resign in the Commons compared with the general refusal to to that here. 0:00:00 Start of Recording 0:00:03 The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Baroness Young, HM Government, Conservative) 0:00:40 Lord Peart (Official Opposition, Labour) 0:00:50 Clerk 0:00:55 The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (6th Lord Carrington, HM Government, Conservative) 0:19:59 The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain (Lord Hailsham of Saint Marylebone, HM Government, Conservative) 0:20:34 Lord Shackleton (Labour) 0:29:21 6th Lord Carrington (Conservative) intervenes 0:29:43 6th Lord Carrington (Conservative) intervenes again 0:35:13 Lord Byers (Leader of the Liberals) 0:40:35 Lord Home of the Hirsel (Conservative) 0:44:26 Lord Aylestone (Social Democratic Party) 0:48:32 Lord Soper (Labour) 0:53:55 Lord Duncan-Sandys (Conservative) 0:57:07 Lord Brockway (Labour) 1:02:02 Lord Shackleton (Labour) intervenes 1:02:52 4th Lord Mottistone (Conservative) 1:05:27 Lord Noel-Baker (Labour) 1:17:39 Lord Beloff (Conservative) 1:23:20 Lord Buxton of Alsa (Conservative) 1:27:10 Lord Stewart of Fulham (Labour) 1:36:24 Lord Thomas of Swynnerton (Conservative) 1:39:34 2nd Viscount Caldecote (Conservative) 1:44:17 Lord Jenkins of Putney (Labour) 1:50:26 4th Lord Bethell (Conservative) 1:55:05 A Noble Lord 1:55:09 Lord Wigg (Labour) 1:56:34 'Order!' 1:59:30 Lord George-Brown (Crossbench according to DNB) 2:03:11 Lord Davies of Leek (Labour) intervenes 2:03:59 A noble Lord (inaudible) intervenes 2:04:53 Lord Davies of Leek (Labour) intervenes again 2:05:24 Lord Molloy (Labour) 2:12:11 Lord Mayhew (Liberal) 2:17:02 Lord Peart (Official Opposition, Labour) 2:22:47 The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (2nd Viscount Trenchard, HM Government, Conservative)) 2:23:52 Lord Shackleton (Labour) intervenes 2:25:26 Lord Byers (Liberal Leader) intervenes 2:28:21 Lord Molloy (Labour) intervenes 2:33:23 Lord Shackleton (Labour) intervenes again 2:36:11 Lord Peart (Official Opposition, Labour) intervenes 2:37:30 The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain (Lord Hailsham of Saint Marylebone, HM Government, Conservative) 2:37:47 Motion Moved 2:38:00 Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard (Deputy Chief Whip) (7th Lord Sandys, HM Government, Conservative) 2:38:25 Lord Peart (Official Opposition, Labour) 2:38:38 The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain (Lord Hailsham of Saint Marylebone, HM Government, Conservative) 2:39:03 Adjournment
