This foaling had us holding our breath for a minute. Lexi went into labor and the baby’s front feet were upside down at first, which can make things really tricky during delivery. After a quick call to the vet and a lot of careful watching, this little bay colt finally made his way into the world. 💙🐴 He came out a little slow to start breathing, so we had to help him clear fluid and get going. Once he was up, we focused on all the important newborn foal steps: cleaning his navel, helping him pass meconium, checking his breathing, and making sure he eventually gets that first colostrum from mama. Because he was a little early in the breeding season and slow to latch, our vet also gave him plasma to make sure he gets the antibodies he needs while he figures out nursing. Foaling season is never predictable. Even when everything is prepared, babies like to keep us on our toes. Watching a maiden mare step into motherhood and seeing a newborn foal take those first shaky steps never gets old.
