The Land Mattress was a World War II rocket launcher that should never have existed. Built from RAF rocket motors, Royal Navy warheads, and Army surplus fuses — assembled in a bottling factory after the British War Office rejected the project — it became one of the most devastating area-saturation weapons of 1944-45. A single 12-launcher battery could deliver 384 rockets onto a target in under 8 seconds, putting approximately 162 kg of high explosive on German positions in one concentrated salvo. From its first combat use at Walcheren Island on 1 November 1944 through to the final push into Germany in April 1945, the Land Mattress fired over 13,300 rockets during Operation Veritable alone. In this video, we examine the technical specifications, the improbable development story, the combat record, and how it compared to the German Nebelwerfer, Soviet Katyusha, and American T34 Calliope. 🔔 Subscribe for more untold WW2 stories: / @Since1940s 👍 Like this video if you learned something new 💬 Comment below: What other WW2 tactics should we cover? #worldwar2 #ww2history #ww2 #wwii #Since1940s ⚠️ Disclaimer: This is entertainment storytelling based on WW2 events from internet sources.
