For example, if a glazed steel plate has a no-go warp measurement of 0.007", sanding the plate until the glaze is removed will generally improve the no-go warp measurement to 0.006" or less (possibly even 0.004"). My (speculative) point about the fiber clutch plates hardening over time/numerous heat cycles and losing some of their grip is to some extent analogous to a situation where a tire loses some of its grip over time due to miles-in-service, age, and exposure to the elements.
