We finish this week by choosing to work within the restraints of our already tight palette. We've already explored what we can call tiny hue differences between our pigments, as well as contrasts in terms of temperature. Today we try to take in all that knowledge and use it in a subtle way to execute a painting that relies on it's design - 3 shapes of values. A dark mass, a mid-tone, and a light (which we're not even going to paint, we're going to let the bright ground be our lightest light). The reason the ground is being left untouched, is because the painting is so subtle that every single decision matters, especially those initial ones. So the character of that contour is as important as the instances where some features were modeled while others were swallowed by atmosphere. The vagueness that is trapped in that sharper contour is intentional. I've said it before, but I consider Colleen to be the most talented painter that has come out of a contemporary classical atelier program. And I say this not because of her outstanding technical ability surpasses the other people that have "graduated" from these programs throughout the years. I think that what makes her different is something that lies in a place that I cannot describe nor can I quantify. It's not about being accurate, or having more knowledge about form and construction. It's about the way she sees this world. It's about what she chooses to emphasize and how she chooses to interpret it through painting. There are souls imprisoned in her paintings. How do you paint that? Who can teach you how to paint something that is not within our grasp? I personally have no idea how else to describe how I feel about her work, but when I see a painting of hers, I think it represents our humanity. That which makes us human beings, whatever that may be. It's as if you strip all those things that make us specific, our upbringing, our beliefs, our politics, our social standing, our native toungues; if you take them away we're left with a quiet, primal human being. And I think that is what she paints. An undisturbed version of who we are, and I feel total kinship with the people that she represents. They are me.
