A Short-Eared Owl visited our island at the head of Lake Onalaska on Sunday. One of the world's most widely distributed owls, the Short-eared Owl is an open country, ground-nesting species that inhabits marshes, grasslands, and tundra throughout much of North America and Eurasia. What was it doing out during the day? Short-eared owls are active day and night. The reed covered islands at the head of Lake Onalaska provide excellent winter hunting for this and other species associated with tundra and open grasslands. They tend to hunt low above the ground, often quartering an area on slightly dihedral wings or hovering: think Short-Eared Owls, Northern Harriers, and Rough-Legged Hawks, all of which we've seen hunting here. How about that call? I expected Short-Eared Owls to have the big, booming voice of a Great Horned Owl. Instead, its higher pitch and kee-oww puts me in mind of a Bald Eagle. This owl wasn't vocalizing, but we added vocals recorded by Logan McLeod up in the Yukon and downloaded from https://xeno-canto.org/. Perhaps this owl is on its way back. Winter is beginning to lose its grip on the Flyway as the ice melts, although we've most likely five to seven days before ice-out.
