Justice Minister David Lametti announced on Thursday that the government was delaying the expansion of medically-assisted dying (MAiD) which would have allowed people with mental illness as their sole underlying condition to seek a medically assisted death. It was planned to begin in March 17, but Lametti said there would be a bill to amend the legislation and it could be put forward as soon as the House resumes sitting at the end of January. Lametti, as well as Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Carolyn Bennett, in speaking about the expansion, stressed that having thoughts of suicide was "not a reason" to get the procedure. Lametti and Bennett's comments came over questions about protections that would be in place for people with mental illness who may be looking at MAiD.
