Newborn Baby Rash Erythema Toxicum Neonatorum Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

This video is about transient benign rash - Erythema Toxicum Neonatorum. This usually occurs in 50% of full term infants. However it is rarely seen in premature babies. It occurs in all ethnic groups and male and females are equally effected. This rash may be seen at birth but it typically appears within first 48 hours of life up to 2 weeks of age. Clinically this rash appears as barely elevated firm yellowish white 1-2 millimeters papules or even pustules. These papules are usually surrounded by an irregular 1 - 3 cm erythematous area.. These papules or pustules may be either clustered or dispersed in several sites such as face, trunk, neck, back or limbs. These lesions wax and wan and usually last a week or few days. No specific treatment is required. But it is better to consult a pediatrician as some serious rashes or skin infections may mimic Erythema Toxicum.
