Visiting Egyptian specialists treat over 200 patients in two days

Watch on oneafrica.tv, DStv or GOtv at 19:00 daily #NewsOnOne #oneafrica By: Ketemba Tjipepa Over 200 patients with back and joint problems were treated by a group of visiting Egyptian doctors who are on a week-long visit offering free medical check-up in Windhoek. A group of 40 doctors, including dentists and psychologists, have been providing free medical services at the Katutura State Hospital as well as Windhoek Central Hospital since Monday and will continue until tomorrow. The group, known as the Coptic Medical Association of North America (CMANA), started their journey at the Coptic Orthodox Church in Pioneers Park on Sunday and proceeded to Katutura State hospital to treat patients with joint and back chronic pains. A specialist surgeon in Namibia, Dr. Youssef Saad, stated that the team managed to screen more than 200 patients in the first two days and did procedures on nearly 120 patients. “We are receiving an overwhelming number of patients. In the first two days we managed to screen more than 200 people and we did procedures of close to 120 patients. The remaining days like today and tomorrow which is the last two days of the campaign, because the procedures are a little bit more complex we are slowing down to be able to do something like 60 patients per day,” Saad stated. Saad says that they identified the need to treat people with chronic pains as some do not necessarily need to be operated on but administer injections or with physiotherapy. An Egyptian physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, Meriam Zakhary, who treats pain using interventions such as injections said there is nothing more rewarding than seeing more people coming to be treated for back pain and returning home feeling better. “We are doing as many injections as possible as we can. There is nothing more rewarding than to have someone walk in here with pain and to be able to give them treatment and see them get up and walk out of here not in pain,” says Zakhary. One of the patients, Hilma Kajele an elderly woman, complimented the doctors for coming to treat people with back and joint pains. “I came from Walvis Bay to seek help. Now I have got help.I want to thank God for sending doctors to help the elderly,” Kajele said. Another patient, Lucresia Ndisiro, praised the doctors for the service. “The doctors are great and they are treating us well,” says Ndisiro. The group, in collaboration with the health ministry, also conducted outreach programmes at schools and non-governmental organisations.
