Our very own Squadron Leader Ted Coningsby was honoured to take part in the flypast over Buckingham Palace for the King's Birthday, also known as Trooping the Colour. Ted departed from RAF Coningsby in Typhoon ZK381 along with two pilots from Lossiemouth (and an extra bear friend too). This is the worlds first four-seater Eurofighter. Ted's flight was a full 90 minutes and Ted was proudly in the the 'CR' formation and amongst 70 aircraft that took part in the flypast. Ted also returned as a four-ship, with a specatular 'run and break'. From RAF Coningsby, a total of Twenty Two Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 callsign 'WARLORD' & ‘COBRA’ departed for the King's Birthday, Trooping the Colour. It is a military ceremony that has been held to mark the official birthday of the British Sovereign for more than 260 years. Over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together each June in a great display of military precision, horsemanship and fanfare to mark the Sovereign's official birthday. The streets are lined with crowds waving flags as the parade moves from Buckingham Palace and down The Mall to Horse Guard's Parade, alongside Members of the Royal Family on horseback and in carriages. The display closes with an RAF fly-past, watched by Members of the Royal Family from Buckingham Palace balcony. Once the Sovereign has arrived at Horse Guard's Parade in Whitehall, they are greeted by a Royal salute and carry out an inspection of the troops, who are fully trained and operational soldiers wearing the ceremonial uniform of red tunics and bearskin hats. After the military bands have performed, the escorted Regimental Colour, or flag, is processed down the ranks of soldiers. Over one hundred words of command are used by the Officer in Command of the Parade to direct the several hundred soldiers. Once the Foot Guards have marched past the Sovereign, they ride back to Buckingham Palace at the head of the soldiers, before taking the salute again at the Palace from a dais. The Sovereign is then joined by other Members of the Royal Family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. A 41-gun salute is also fired in Green Park to mark the occasion. RAF Coningsby is a QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) station, the base is ready to scramble at a seconds notice. Anything could happen and it is one of our two QRA stations (the other is at RAF Lossiemouth) that works 24/7 365 days a year to keep our skies safe. Lincolnshire is also known as 'Bomber County' because of the amount of Bomber Command Squadrons that were based in the county during the Second World War. Approximately 125,000 aircrew flew with Bomber Command during World War II (their average age was 22). 73,700 of them became casualties (killed, wounded or shot down and taken prisoner of war), of those 55,500 were killed. RAF Coningsby opened in 1941, serving as an RAF Bomber Command station until the early 1960s. Coningsby has been a fighter station since the Phantom arrived in the late 1960s, followed by the Tornado and now the Typhoon. In 1976, Coningsby became home to the world-famous RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The station has also been home to 617 Squadron and a base for the Vulcan Bomber.
