I filmed a video for the first time this year. Recently, I purchased a Leica M9-P and a Leica Summaron 35mm. Despite being an old camera, the M9-P felt not the least bit inconvenient for street photography. True to its Kodak CCD sensor, I think it has the most analog-like texture and color of any digital camera I’ve ever used. I completely agree with photographer Choi Matae’s description of it as an “infinite-film digital camera.” When shooting street photography with the M9-P, I used zone focusing with the aperture set to f/8 or higher. Of course, compared to the AF performance of my main camera, the Leica Q3 43—or even the original Leica Q—it is much slower and less accurate. However, it was never inconvenient to the point of disrupting my shooting, and in some situations it actually has advantages: there’s no AF hesitation, and I can shoot immediately at the distance I want. I don’t consider the M9-P to be particularly small or light, but when paired with a compact lens, it’s comfortable to use even without an additional grip, and it’s more portable than the Q3 43, which is another plus. That said, the greatest strengths of the M9-P are the complete absence of power-on delay thanks to its mechanical shutter, and the fact that—even without image stabilization—it can still produce sharp images at low shutter speeds such as 1/30 or even 1/15. This is due to the characteristics of a rangefinder camera (and its relatively low resolution). These slower shutter speeds make it easier to use smaller apertures, and they remind me how useful this must have been in the film era, when high-ISO noise reduction technology as we know it today simply didn’t exist. - 새해들어 처음으로 영상을 찍었습니다. 최근 라이카 M9-P와 라이카 주마론 35mm를 구매했습니다. M9-P는 오래된 카메라임에도 거리를 촬영하는데 있어서 조금도 불편함이 없었습니다. 코닥 CCD 센서 답게 제가 사용한 모든 디지털 카메라 중 가장 아날로그한 질감과 컬러를 가졌다고 생각합니다. ‘무한필름 디지털카메라’라는 최마태님의 말에 완전히 공감합니다. M9-P로 스트릿을 촬영할 때는 조리개를 8이상 맞추는 존 포커싱을 사용했습니다. 물론 제가 주로 사용하는 라이카 Q3 43이나 심지어 라이카 Q의 AF와 비교하면 그 속도는 훨씬 느리고 정확성이 떨어집니다. 그러나 제가 촬영을 하는데 불편함이 있는 정도는 아니었고 때로는 AF의 버벅임이 없고 원하는 거리로 바로 촬영할 수 있다는 점에서는 이점도 있습니다. M9-P가 결코 작거나 가볍다고 생각하진 않는데, 작은 렌즈와 조합시 따로 그립이 없어도 불편하지 않고 Q3 43보다 휴대성이 용이한 점도 유리합니다. 하지만 M9-P의 가장 큰 장점은 기계식 셔터로 인해 전원 딜레이가 전혀 느껴지지 않는 다는 점과 손떨림방지가 없음에도 불구하고 레인지파인더 특성상 (그리고 상대적으로 낮은 해상도로 인해) 1/30이나 1/15 같은 낮은 셔터속도에서도 좋은 사진을 건질 수 있다는 점입니다. 이러한 낮은 셔터속도 덕분에 높은 조리개값을 확보할 수 있는데, 요즘처럼 고감도 노이즈 억제 기술이 없었던 필름시절 이것이 얼마나 유용했을지 생각하게 되었습니다. - Daegu, South Korea | January, 2026 Leica Leica M9-P & Leica Summaron 35mm f/3.5 (RAW) DJI Osmo Nano (1090 30fps) instagram & Threads @CJay_kim
