*On view at the exhibition “𝘽𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙖𝙣, 𝘽𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜” at Terminal Gallery from October 19 - November 13, 2020. -- Farang Kee Nok (Bird Sh!t Foreigner) is an absurdist video artwork that touches on the hypocrisy of ex-pats who fetishize the cultures of the countries they move to, and the way they tend to insert themselves into cultural matters that they have no authority speaking on. This video shows a conversation between an arrogant husband, Jack, and his wife, Manee. The husband begins spouting off his opinion about the phrase, “farang kee nok,” which translates to “bird sh!t foreigner” in Thai. The video purposely utilizes ADR (Automated Dialog Replacement) to add a surreal dissonance to the piece. This piece was inspired by actual comments that a white ex-pat left on an online article about anti-blackness in Thailand, as well as the reality TV series, 90 Day Fiancé, which features quite a few of these aforementioned intercultural relationships. The video was created during a mentor workshop with the visual artist Kalup Linzy for the Chautauqua Visual Arts (CVA) residency. -- #thaifood #farang #expat #parody #90dayfiance #contemporaryart #contemporaryvideo #contemporarycurators #thaifood #thaicontemporaryart #newmedia #asianfilmmakers #contemporarygallery #videoartist #thaiart #covid19 #asianforblacklives #aapi #asianamericanartist #thai #pdxart #chicagoartist #portlandoregon #maymaylisacat #thaitown #performanceart
