Deepfakes and disinformation use advanced artificial intelligence to create highly realistic, but fake media (text, audio, video or images) often with the intent to deceive, manipulate or disrupt. These technologies can fabricate speeches, actions or identities, making it difficult to discern truth from fiction. Cyber attackers use deepfakes to tarnish reputations, spread false information and manipulate public opinion, while disinformation campaigns are orchestrated to create discord, influence elections or destabilise societies. This media can be rapidly spread via social media and other digital platforms amplifies their impact, making them tools for propaganda and social engineering.
