Thors Cave Visit, Manifold Way in the Staffordshire Peak District. 14th October, 2024. Thor's Cave (also known as Thor's House Cavern and Thyrsis's Cave) is a natural cavern located in the Manifold Valley of the White Peak in Staffordshire, England. It is classified as a karst cave. Located in a steep limestone crag, the cave entrance, a symmetrical arch 7.5 metres wide and 10 metres high, is prominently visible from the valley bottom, around 80 metres (260 feet) below. Reached by an steep stepped path from the Manifold Way, the cave is a popular tourist spot, with views over the Manifold Valley. The second entrance is known as the "West Window". This particualr entrance I did not know of on the day. Thor's Cave was served by a railway station on the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway from 1904 to 1934, the disused line now forms the Manifold Way. I would assume this would be the very same line which follows onto the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway walk, near to Waterhouses, approx 6 miles away. Hence the name of this area, Manifold Way. About my walk on the day... This walking route and eventual visit to Thors Cave entrance was not originally planned for on this day. You'll learn my original planned destination and why I should have gone elsewhere when watching this video. No worries though as I did manage to get this walk in to Thors Cave entrance along with another destination and video for the final video for my Staffordshire Wildlif Trust's playlist, which was Weags Barn wood, not too far away from here. So, I did kill two birds with one stone, as the saying goes. Now, back to the walk itself... A relaxing near riverside walk, which was very quite bar a few people passing us (me and Millie) on bicycles and on foot. The river Manifold itself was very dry and almost static water where the river showed itself above ground in certain places. So, late Autumn and the winter months would be better for seeing a full and flowing river Manifold, me thinks. The walk from our park up point near to Weag's Bridge took us about 30 mins of steady walking to the bottom of the steep hillside ready to take on the steep steps walk to Thors Cave entrance. After finally and painstakingly (breathing problems for me) navigating our way to the top of the hill the surrounding scenery from our final standpoint was quite something with valleys and Tors all around. It was a clear blue sky on the day which made the views even more interesting to see. Unfortunately we could not enter Thor's Cave itself as the entrance to it from this point was too much for myself and Millie our dog to climb up, which is quite ridiculous in my book after making such a taxing and demanding (for some age groups)) climb up to it's entrance. Hung around the top for 20 mins or so in all before making our way back down the hillside via the steps and finally back onto the pathway from where we came, finally getting back in the car some 60 mins later from start off time. All in all I was pleased we made the walk and in particular making it to the top of the hill, even though we could not acccess the inner parts of Thor's Cave itself. No doubt this walk and surrounding areas and attractions would have been much busier during the summer and peak (see what I did there) times of the year. Thanks for looking in. Till next time.
