Project C1 gets 25mm spacers and wheel arch extensions

Today’s video is a big one, we attack the car with an angle grinder! I’ve decided to fit some 25mm wheel spacers to the car and because the wheels are already much wider than standard, I need to also fit some arch extensions to keep it road legal. It also fixes the problem of the wheels rubbing on full lock on the OEM wheel hubs. That said, then the car bounces on it’s suspension, that would mean that the bodywork will chop straight down into the centre of the tyre… which isn’t good. I bought an arch (fender?) roller from eBay for this very reason, so I can roll the bodywork away from the wheel and everything will be great… but its garbage! I’m not sure whether it’s the fault of the roller, the quality of the bodywork or just the operator, but it was just warping the panels, rather than rolling them. There’s only one thing for it then… angle grinder! We fitted the arches to allow space for me to lower the car in the future by 35mm and used M5 riv nuts and button head screws to hold them in place. We then marked up the bodywork underneath the new arches and unceremoniously cut away at it with an angle grinder. Now, I’m no body work guy, but it seemed to be alright in the end. I ended up folding the exposed sharp metal and using a hammer and dolly to re-form the inner lip, which will be covered with a plastic protective sheath in the near future, but done off camera. Once heat was formed, it was time to fit the wheel spacers. To fit the wheel spacers, I used the spare steel wheel bolts that Project C1 used to use before I installed the alloys. I installed them just as I would as if they were holding a wheel to the hub, by torquing them down to 100 Nm. The wheel spacers have the added advantage of also being a stud conversion kit for the car too, so no more fiddling around with lining up wheel bolts. I bought a set of 16 alloy wheel nuts and 4 steel wheel nuts, all in black, so that should the worst happen, I can fit my steel spare wheel onto the spacer. Also, and I know one of you will mention it, I know what wheel spacers do to wheel bearings. Fear not, I have a set of new wheel bearings and they’ll be installed in a future video. I know that this process looks rough AF and scary at times because if we’d gotten the rears wrong, I’d be looking at a re-shell for the car, but honestly, the finished product is well worth it in my humble opinion. Once it’s been lowered and I finally get round to my turbo instal, it’ll be so much better than when I started.
