Стальной скок, балет в 2 картинах/The Steel Step, a Ballet in 2 Scenes Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (Сергей Сергеевич Прокофьев/Sergey Sergeyevich Prokofiev) (1891-1953) was a Russian/Soviet composer, pianist, and conductor. His works range from piano sonatas to operas, and he is regarded as one of the most important composers of the 20th century. Le pas d’acier! It is a very delightful and charming work in my opinion, and while it is not as famous as the 2 grand ballets of later years, it is still an interesting and appealing work nevertheless. Filled with energy and rhythmic drive, but still appealing…! The ballet was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, who was very impressed by Russian contemporary artists at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts - and he wanted something to celebrate Soviet industrialization. The scenario was written by the composer and Constructivist artist Georgi Yakulov. However, during the stage preparation, the scenario went through changes in the storyline. Against Yakulov’s wishes, the production involved scenes of Russian folklore with choreography by Léonide Massine. It premiered at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt on June 7, 1927, with mixed response from the critics. But it appeared that the production was deemed successful enough to be performed for 3 consecutive seasons. After the death of Diaghilev, the composer tried to stage this ballet in the USSR, but the Association of Proletarian Musicians disapproved of it. The original name proposed by Yakulov was Ursignol, but later, it changed to le Pas d’Acier. Some suggested that Diaghilev was the one who changed the name, but others suggest that Léonide Massine suggested that name, and the composer translated that into Russian. Первая картина/Scene 1 (0:00) No.1 Явление участников/Entrée des personnages (2:38) No.2 Поезд с мешочниками/Train des paysans-ravitailleurs (3:19) And here’s my favorite melody from this ballet. It’s quite charming and light. (5:13) No.3 Комиссары/Les commissaires (7:13) No.4 Разносчики товаров: Ирисники и папиросники/Les petits camelots (9:19) No.5 Оратор/L’orateur (11:20) No.6 Матрос в браслете и работница/Matelot à bracelets et ouvrière Вторая картина/Scene 2 (14:11) No.7 Перестройка декораций/Changement de décors - Markevitch recording omits this part, so Rozhdestvensky recording is used. (17:20) No.8 Обращение матроса в рабочего/Le matelot devient un ouvrier (18:50) No.9 Фабрика/L’usine - Also, Markevitch recording has unexplained cuts that differs from the full score, so till the end, the recording is Rozhdestvensky. Sorry. (22:00) No.10 Молоты/Les marteaux (25:25) No.11 Финал. Заключительная сцена/Finale - The finale contains a reprise of the initial theme.
