Bronze coin from the ancient city of Amphipolis in Macedonia, struck during the reign of Emperor Tiberius between 14 and 37 AD. The obverse shows the portrait of Tiberius facing right, calm and dignified in the early imperial style. The reverse features Artemis Tauropolos riding a bull to the right, holding a flowing sail above her head — a lively image symbolizing divine motion and protection. Tiberius was the second emperor of Rome, the stepson and successor of Augustus. Born in 42 BC, he was a capable general who secured Rome’s frontiers in Germania and the Balkans. As emperor, he maintained order and fiscal stability, guiding the empire through a long period of peace. His later years were marked by isolation on the island of Capri, but his legacy as a disciplined and effective ruler endured. This coin connects the local artistry of Amphipolis with the broader reach of Roman authority, blending classical Greek tradition with early imperial power. A beautifully balanced piece from the formative years of the Roman Empire.
