So we left Port Hedland with our Mountain Trail RV LXV 6.7 caravan an in tow, in 36 degrees heat, and gratefully headed south, hoping for cooler weather. First stop was Point Samson and its expensive caravan park. This is the fist caravan park we have encountered that actually has metal hooks in its concrete slabs, designed to fasten, not your caravan awning down in the event of wind…but your caravan itself in the event of a cyclone! On to Karratha and its neighbouring town of Dampier, which we thoroughly enjoyed, in particular the cooler sea breezes from the Dampier Peninsula. Dampier is the home of the wandering “Red Dog”. Of course we had to visit the tribute statue to Red Dog. We were hugely impressed by the “North West Shelf” gas pipeline project based in Dampier, and even more impressed by the clean, tidy and quiet beaches in the area. From Karratha we moved to the very quiet and secluded town of Onslow, the “cooler change” they call it, and it certainly was cooler with its refreshing sea breezes. It’s hard to believe that Onslow is apparently the most cyclone prone town in all of Australia! From Onslow we headed to Exmouth, which is only 60km away “as the crow flies”, but we were not crow flying but making the 400km trip around the Ningaloo reef peninsula, and once again, when we got to Exmouth it was 36 degrees! Exmouth on the Ningaloo coast is renowned for its whale watching and whale shark population. We didn’t see any! During all of these travels we have been staying at expensive powered caravan sites, because we needed the power for our caravan air conditioning, being unable to stay at cheaper non powered spots due to the failure of our Redarc inverter, which would have enabled us to run our caravan air conditioning from its 12v power system. There does seem to be an issue with “some” of these inverters failing when mounted to “off road” caravans such as our Mountain Trail LXV 6.7. It may have something to do with vibrations and lack of a suspension mount for the inverter …but I am still investigating!
