Are There Very Many Geniuses in Quant Finance?

I was recently at a quant conference and someone mentioned how many smart people there are in the quant finance industry. I strongly disagree and hit a little too hard in my response that the industry was full of idiots. Are quants smarter than the average citizen? Yes, of course. Are there really crowds of smart people that could change the industry or the world? No. There is a lot to being "smart." Being technically smart is very hard and I have found very few people that are truly smart and impressive. On top of that there are very few quants who can sell their ideas, communicate, and drive change. All of those are in my definition of "really smart people."
