In Episode 7, Kandi highlights the major differences between the Citation Excel, XLS and XLS+ (XL Series). As a certified expert in the Citation series, The Citation Excel was produced from 1998-2004 when Textron introduced the XLS. The major difference between the Excel and XLS include the landing gear fairing, a new access door for the hydraulic system next to the battery access door (previously the battery and hydraulic reservoir was accessed in the same door on the Excel). The XLS comes standard with an APU and the XLS is equipped as standard with an externally serviceable lav. The most noticeable difference between the XLS and XLS+ nose is the nose cone on XLS+, which is most longer and streamlined on the XLS+ and XLS Gen 2. With respect to the engines, The Excel is equipped with the Pratt & Whitney 545A, the XLS is equipped with the 545B engine and the XLS+ is equipped with the 545C engines. The main difference is with the 545A engines, which have less thrust and require a step climb to get up to Flight Level 450 (45,000'). When the 545B engines were introduced in 2004, these engines were equipped with the Electronic Engine Controls ('EEC") that allowed for an additional 200 nm range because the computers allowed the engines to burn fuel more efficiently. Then came the 545C engines on the XLS+, in 2008, which were further enhanced with the Full Authority Digital Electronic Controls ("FADEC"), although the XLS+ has the same range as the XLS. In the cockpit, both the Excel and XLS are equipped with the Primus 1000 avionics system. However, the XLS avionics are more fully integrated than the Excel with 2 flight directors, upgraded electronic N1 and N2 tapes, and upgraded EIS system. The Excel and XLS also have the option for a single FMS or dual FMS. The XLS+ and XLS Gen2 come equipped with the advance Proline 21 avionics suite.
