The talk "Agriculture 4.0: research topics towards increased efficiency and sustainability" was presented by Dr. Matteo Gatti and Dr. Nicoleta Suciu, UCSC (ISEP, Portugal) at the 1st TERRATECH Workshop, which was held during 13-14th December 2021. 1st TERRATECH Workshop Website: https://eventum.upf.edu/73839/detail/... Talk summary: In 2018 The World Government Summit stated that 70 % more food will be asked to be produced by 2050 when the world's population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion. Meanwhile, agriculture’s share of global GDP has shrunk to just 3 %, approximately 800 million people suffer from hunger and, under a business-as-usual scenario, 650 million will still be undernourished by 2030. Moreover, facing scarcity of natural resources and land degradation, higher efficiency and reduced impacts of agriculture will be mandatory in the next decades. To meet these challenges concerted efforts will be required and innovative technologies adopted in agriculture. Agriculture 4.0 will no longer depend on applying water, fertilizers, and pesticides uniformly across entire fields, and farmers will minimize the use of input through site-specific applications. Furthermore, the traditional approach to farm management will change, primarily due to advancements in enabling technologies for digital agriculture such as sensors, devices, mechatronics, information technology, and robotics. The current communication will present the main research topics carried out at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy) in order to develop and test novel solutions concerning decision support systems, precision agriculture and robotic systems towards a more profitable, efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly agriculture.
