There was a surprise ending to a COVID-19 street check by police in Italy. In the Mafia-stronghold of Gioia Tauro, a police check on someone breaching lockdown uncovered a huge load of cocaine, allegedly buried by a Mafia boss's son. Let me tell you about it. The Mob Reporter here with the story of Rocco Molé, the 25-year-old son of a local boss of a clan of the ‘Ndrangheta, which is the name of the Calabrian Mafia. Police followed him as he snuck back to a rural property when he was spotted walking in the street. A police squad searched and found 150 bricks of cocaine inside plastic baskets in the shed. Some of them were marked with the logo of famed Spanish soccer club Real Madrid. Another 340 bricks were wrapped in plastic and found buried underground in a nearby citrus grove. Altogether it weighed 537 kilos. NEW: JOIN ME ON PATREON: / themobreporter Molè was raised well in the mob tradition. Likely to prevent an invasive investigation into his family, he declared he was the sole owner of it all. So it seems, as is so often the case within the ‘Ndrangheta, that Rocco Molè has gone into the family business. The Molé family has more than a century of Mafia history, and is another example of the multi-generational aspect of the Italian Mafia. Rocco’s father has been a significant crime figure. Girolamo Molè, known as Mommo, is currently serving a life sentence but remains the head of the clan that bares his family’s last name. Mommo replaced his own father, Antonio, as the boss of the clan. Gioia Tauro is a great place for the clan to operate, because of its enormous seaport — the largest container port on the Mediterranean and one of the great contraband gateways to Europe, meaning it is also one a gateway to power and influence. The Molè family, along with their allies, the Piromalli clan, had an iron grip on the port when an estimated 80% of Europe’s total cocaine supply came through the docks. That makes it seem obvious how Rocco Molè or the Molè clan would get their hands on half a ton of cocaine. And it’s half a ton that has now been removed from the supply chain, thanks to the dreadful coronavirus. The coronavirus has been bad for Rocco Molè and I hope it isn't for you.
