Time to melt some wax! In this video, I’m walking you through how I make my own encaustic medium using beeswax and damar resin—yes, even with thrift store tools and a crockpot I scored for $5. Whether you’re new to encaustic or just tired of store-bought bricks that cost a fortune, this DIY process is easier (and thriftier) than you think. I’ll show you how I measure, melt, strain, and pour my own wax medium—with a few tips on avoiding smoke, gunk, and wasted time. Currently this ends up costing roughly $14 a pound and your studio smells like honey. I use an 8:1 ration that works for both flat work and sculptural pieces. If you’re working big—or just working smart—making your own is the way to go. Got questions about gear, ratios, or resin? Drop them in the comments—I’m happy to help! SUPPLIES LIST Beeswax (I used 4 lbs) Damar resin (8 oz) Crockpot or electric frying pan Mortar and pestle Metal strainer Flexible molds Dust mask + thermometer ✨ Let me know if you make your own, or if you’ve got a go-to setup that works better! 00:18 Tools and Materials I Use 00:44 Ratio: Beeswax to Damar Resin 01:16 Grinding the Resin (Don’t Skip the Mask!) 04:34 Safety & Temperature Tips 05:01 Straining the Medium 06:00 Pouring Into Molds 07:49 What to Do About Leftover Impurities 09:19 Unmolding the Next Day 09:45 Final Thoughts -- Subscribe for photo tips for artists, encaustic collage and fun art explorations.
