(13 Oct 2020) The Miraflores district of Lima, one of the most exclusive in Peru, has seen a 100% increase of those infected with COVID-19, officials have said. Miraflores, in the center of the capital, has 100,000 inhabitants. But on weekends no less than 400,000 visitors arrive here, in private vehicles, by public transport, on bicycle and even on foot, with whole families, who have been under almost six months of virus confinement, now seeking to be distracted and enjoy themselves. People come in droves to the district to walk along its boardwalks, enjoy its scenic areas and visit shopping centers. This huge influx has caused a major uptick in infections during the second week of September, with 174% of new infections, while the last week of that month it reached 113%. "The number of cases is growing in the wealthy and middle class neighborhoods, with higher socio-economic levels," said Dante Cersso, head of the intelligence and data unit of EsSalud (Social Security of Peru). Cersso said that the greatest increase was in Miraflores with it's abundance of parks and seaside pathways, as opposed to some of the poorer neighborhoods further away from the city's center. Last week Miraflores registered more than 4,130 infected, more than 4% of its total population. The increase in Miraflores is concerning as experts point out that the total number of COVID cases in Lima has been declining for five straight weeks. Since the beginning of the pandemic in early March, Peru, has had the highest per capita number of COVID-19 deaths in the world, registering a total of 839,929 infected and 32,914 deaths. Lima has registered 357,210 cases and 13,591 dead.
