French Toast Ingredients 4 large eggs ⅔ cup whole milk (or half-and-half for extra richness) ¼ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste; can reduce if you prefer less sweet) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Pinch of salt 8 thick slices of bread (day-old or slightly stale is best—brioche, challah, Texas toast, or hearty white bread works great; about ¾-inch thick) Butter (for cooking; 2–3 tablespoons total, plus more for serving) Optional add-ins: a dash of nutmeg or orange zest for extra flavor Toppings (pick your favorites) Maple syrup Powdered sugar Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) Whipped cream or butter Instructions In a shallow bowl or baking dish (wide enough for dipping the bread), whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth and well combined. No lumps! Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt and foam (adjust heat if it browns too fast). Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture for about 10–20 seconds per side—long enough to soak it through but not so long that it falls apart. Let excess drip off. Place the soaked slices in the hot skillet (don't overcrowd—cook in batches). Cook 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crisp on the edges. Add more butter between batches as needed. Transfer cooked slices to a warm oven (200°F) if making multiple batches to keep them hot. Serve immediately while warm—stack them up, dust with powdered sugar, add a pat of butter, and drizzle generously with maple syrup. Fresh berries make it even better!
