Hyper Demon is Surreal Perfection! (Review). Plain and simple, Hyper Demon is one of my favorite FPS games ever made. The fact that this game came out last year with minimal hype and fanfare is a shame, but I am very excited to talk about the game and explain why I think it's so brilliant. Hyper Demon is the sequel to another favorite first person shooter of mine, Devil Daggers, which also features the same style of survival arena combat. I've head the game described as "bullet hell" and being a shmup player I don't that's totally accurate, but I get the idea because the series involves a lot of arcade design elements like routing, dodging, suppressive fire, and of course dense engaging level design. I've also seen it classified as a "boomer shooter" but I don't think that fits either, as it is new and innovative rather than a retro throwback. One comparison that I think would be interesting to talk about is the Treasure influence, with classic games like Sin and Punishment. I feel like Hyper Demon is a natural successor to what Treasure might have gone on to do in the future, rather than just sticking with shmups forever (they loved genre hopping.) In short this is going to be a glowing review of the game and I do hope we see some additional DLC for a Devil Daggers style survival mode. Though the scoring and design of the score attack Caravan mode is fantastic.
