A search-and-rescue effort is underway for a young solo sailor who sent a distress call from the Great Australian Bight. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) launched the search after an emergency beacon was activated from a solo sailor on board a Queensland-registered six-and-a-half metre sail boat just before 5pm on Friday. AMSA said a merchant ship was diverted to an area about 630 kilometres west of Kangaroo Island and 740 kilometres south-east of Esperance in Western Australia. The authority said the merchant ship was expected to reach the boat's location this morning. A bulk carrier is also making its way to the area, but conditions have been described as severe with winds estimated at about 100 kilometres per hour, and six-metre seas. Two rescue aircraft arrived on the scene last night and remained overhead overnight, communicating with the sailor by radio, while an RAAF aircraft has also arrived at the scene. The young sailor, Xavier Doerr, had embarked on a solo circumnavigation of Australia hoping to break three records.
