I’m talking about San Miguel de Allende, a small city of about 170,000 people, a four hour drive from Mexico City. Promoted for its charm, food, culture, and people. The first thing I noticed about the people? They’re a lot older and whiter than the average Mexican. I talked to a couple American retirees who live here part time, who said retirees move here because it’s cheaper than where they came from, and not real Mexico. Lonely Planet even called it Disneyland for American and Canadian retirees. I can see why. The historic center is upscale, but affordable on a western salary.
