On May 3, 1997, the Notorious B.I.G’s single “Hypnotize” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became Biggie’s first hit to reach the spot, but he didn’t live to savor the accomplishment. The MC was shot and killed in Los Angeles just eight days after “Hypnotize” was released, so topped the charts posthumously. Biggie was in California that month to promote his upcoming album Life After Death and shoot a video for the song. The iconic clip was directed by Paul Hunter, who also made videos for Puff Daddy and Aaliyah. In an interview with Spin this past March, Hunter said that Biggie never got to see the completed version. “I showed him about a minute and a half in the early rounds and he was really excited,” Hunter said. “He smiled like a kid: This big, warm smile. He never got to see the final product.” Life After Death arrived on March 25, 1997, and quickly shot to No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart. “Hypnotize” made its Billboard debut a month later at No. 2 behind Biggie’s friend, collaborator and label boss, Puff Daddy, whose “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” held the top slot. A week later “Hypnotize” jumped to No. 1. The success of “Hypnotize” made Biggie one of few artists to top the Hot 100 after their death. Two other rappers, Soulja Slim and Static Major, achieved posthumous No 1’s as featured artists. Biggie would soon top the chart again with Life After Death’s second single, “Mo Money, Mo Problems,” making Biggie one of the few artists in Billboard history to achieve two posthumous No. 1 hits.
