Ischial bursitis and proximal hamstring tendinopathy can feel very similar to each other. Generally hamstring tendinopathy is more common in athletic individuals, and ischial bursitis in those who have more sedentary occupations (sit down more), or have sat for a long period on a hard surface. Both are painful close to the ischium bone, which is also known as our 'sitting bone'. A person with ischial bursitis could experience heat, redness and mild swelling in this area. Ice, anti-inflammatory medication can be useful, but most importantly we must try to reduce the amount of compression on the bursa..... therefore, if we must sit, try to reduce the compression on the bursa as much as possible. Diagnostic ultrasound and MRI can be useful to see if the bursa is filled with fluid, and an imaging guided injection may prove beneficial.... but like anything this is never guaranteed.
