Acting Thai govt moves to dissolve parliament as opposition backs rival candidate

Political parties in Thailand are in a new race against time — between a petition to dissolve parliament and a House vote on a fresh prime minister candidate. Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has filed for the dissolution of parliament and called for new polls. In parliament, party whips are undecided on whether to hold a vote on prime minister candidate Anutin Charnvirakul. All eyes are on House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha to make the final decision. The largest party in parliament, the main opposition People's Party, has thrown its support behind Mr Anutin's Bhumjaithai Party and his premiership candidacy, under the condition that he agrees to its terms.
