Why fear death? You won't be around when it happens. That's the basic thinking behind arguments by Epicurus and Lucretius for why we shouldn't let the prospect of our own deaths trouble us. Epicurus argues that there's no time at which your death will be bad for you: not while you're alive, since you're not dead then, and not after you die, since then you won't be around to experience its badness. Lucretius adds a further twist by comparing the time after you die to the time before you were born. The period of non-existence before your birth doesn't trouble you, he says, so why worry about the period of non-existence after your death? These arguments aim to free us from our anxiety about death and help us live a happy and worry-free life. But are they sound? That's the question we'll discuss in the first week of my winter online course, Thinking about the End: Philosophy and Death. https://eganphilosophy.com/thinking-a... https://eganphilosophy.com/ #philosophy #death #epicurus #lucretius #epicurean 0:00 Introduction 0:36 Outline of Epicureanism 3:12 The Tetrapharmakos 5:13 Epicurus's argument for not fearing death 7:57 Lucretius's argument for not fearing death 10:56 Closing
