Chester-le-street Riverside Park is a great place for a wander, with riverside walks along the banks of the River Wear, sculptures to enjoy, loads for the kids and great views of Lumley Castle and the cricket ground. The Riverside Ground is a cricket venue in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, England. It is home to Durham County Cricket Club, and has also hosted several international matches included the famous Ashes (England v Australia) The magnificent spectacle of Lumley Castle dominates the County Durham landscape. Surrounded by beautiful parklands, overlooking the River Wear and Durham County Cricket Ground, Lumley Castle Hotel is a superb monument to a proud history which often hosts visiting cricket teams. The famous story goes that Australian cricketer Shane Watson, famously got "spooked" by the allegedly haunted castle during a 2005 tour, fleeing his room to sleep in Brett Lee's instead, leading to banter from England's Darren Gough about Warne's legend, while the castle itself is known for the ghost of Lady Lumley, who haunts its corridors and well. Originally built by Sir Ralph Lumley in 1389 after he inherited the estate from his ancestors. Originally designed as a grand family home, the castle's dramatic design was influenced by Sir Ralph's desire to leave a lasting legacy.
