We arrived in Gjirokaster after spending a couple days in Sarande. Gjirokaster is just 1 hour by car (55 km) from the port of Sarande, Places to see in Gjirokastër Within our 10-day itinerary through Albania, we made a stop in Gjirokastër, which seemed to us one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Such is its value that it is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being, along with Berat, an exceptional example of Ottoman-era architecture. These are the sites to visit in Gjirokastër that, if possible, you cannot miss: Old Bazaar The streets that make up the Old Bazaar (Qafa e Pazarit in Albanian) are part of the old town of Gjirokastër. This part of the city with cobblestone streets has a lot of charm and is ideal for taking a walk, sitting down for a drink or shopping at the various souvenir shops that display their objects and crafts on the street. Although the original bazaar dates back to the 17th century, this was destroyed during a fire, so it was rebuilt following the same architectural style. One of the most characteristic points of this area of the city is the crossing where Ismail Kadare Street becomes Gjin Zenbesi Street, the house there is spectacular! Bazaar Mosque Within this area is also the Bazaar Mosque (O Xhamia e Pazarit). Specifically, it is on Ismail Kadare Street, where the climb up to the castle begins. This mosque dates back to the 18th century and, during the communist dictatorship of the 20th century, it had a very different use: circus acrobat training room. This is because, during this time, religions were banned, and temples destroyed or used for other purposes. Gjirokastër Castle Without a doubt one of the main attractions of Gjirokastër is its castle. This is located atop a hill, at 330 m altitude, so it offers good views of the city and its surroundings. Its origins date back to the 12th century and inside you can see a clock tower, a military museum, the old prison, etc. The entrance costs 400 lekë (about £3) and can be visited every day from 09:00 to 19:00 (until 17:00 from October to March).
