After conflicting weather forecasts we decided to give this one a go; it had been on my wish list for a long time. Starting from Wray and heading over Salter Fell to Slaidburn for lunch. Fortunately we chose the best direction to do it as it turned out, although our choice of starting point was all about convenience for all of us. Car parking in Wray was at the Bridge House Tea rooms, a popular spot for group meets whether it be classic cars, motorbikes or even mountain bikers. The route is tarmac for some distance until it turns into a track as it climbs up onto the moorland. We didn’t expect to see a living soul as the area is wild and remote from civilisation. So we were gobsmacked to see a helicopter ferrying stuff to and fro for workmen in the middle of nowhere. After a brief rest the descent to Slaidburn began with a mix of fine gravel then loose coarse gravel and small baby heads. Reaching Slaidburn we stopped at the Riverside Cafe for the lunch break and to shoot the breeze. The return route was all tarmac but that didn’t detract from the wild beauty of the area. Once over the high point at the Cross of Greet, the views opened up into the distance and we had a thrilling descent. We had to rein it in a bit as there were unpredictable sheep by the side of the road. Finishing at the Bridge House Tea rooms there was coffee and cakes. A nice ride and thanks to Allan, Bob, Frank and Gerard (alpha order) for coming! Bob's video of the ride: • Start and finish at Wray. Bridge house tea...
