Ukrainian Men’s Foil Team Refuses to Fence Russian Men’s Foil Team

During the Men's Foil Fencing Grand Prix event in Cairo, Egypt this weekend, the Ukrainian team withdrew from the tournament rather than fencing the Russian team which drew applause from the entire venue, even the fencers on the Russian team. During times like these it is important to remember that while we are all incredibly frustrated with Putin and his actions, most Russians are actually opposed to the war. As such we should not take our frustrations out on them. There is a difference between making a political statement by refusing to fence the Russian team and boycotting a Russian-owned business or yelling at people for speaking Russian.
