Test paint in a hidden area of your garment as paint colors may vary on colored or textured fabrics. (0:10) Step 2 - Wash and dry new fabric items to remove sizing. DO NOT use fabric softener. (0:21) Step 3 - Place a piece of cardboard or wax paper between fabric layers. Shirt boards are made for this very purpose. Then, pin the fabric in place to ensure a smooth working surface. (0:34) Step 4 - Design away! To apply straight from the bottle, glide the tip along the fabric. Pick the tip up and start again every three inches, to anchor the paint to the fabric.
