Wide of Roma village STORYLINE: The Roma community in Slovakia is anxious that the government's recent cut in social benefits may have a negative impact on their welfare. The plight of Roma, also known as Gypsies, was once again highlighted over the past week when looting, attacks on police and other unrest broke out over the cuts. The government has been cutting welfare benefits incrementally in recent weeks for the unemployed, a move that has hit Roma, the poorest group in this ex-communist country, harder than anyone else. The violence reached its climax last Monday when police clashed with up to 400 Roma who had gathered in the eastern city of Trebisov for an unauthorised demonstration to protest the cuts. Roma living in Jasov, 450 kilometres (281 miles) east of the Slovakian capital Bratislava say that with no jobs available, they don't know how they will feed themselves and their children when their government money runs out. But the Roma say there are no jobs for them to take. Many are unskilled and face discrimination in Slovak and European society society. The Jasov gypsy community is one of the poorest in Slovakia with 100 percent of its population listed as unemployed. The forest around this remote part of the Slovakia belongs to the Catholic monastery and the Roma are forbidden from picking wood there for their fires. Police patrol the area constantly. The Roma population there complains about the lack of jobs and health and education services. The community suffers from being on the margins of society and from a lack of territory to call a real home.
