(12 Nov 2013) Hundreds of Buddhists marched on the streets of Myanmar's biggest city on Tuesday in protest against an upcoming visit by a high-level delegation from the world's biggest Islamic political bloc. Around 200 Buddhist monks and around a hundred laymen marched from Yangon's famous Shwedagon pagoda to downtown City Hall to protest against the upcoming visit of representatives of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a grouping of 57 Islamic countries. The OIC representatives were due to arrive on Wednesday to speak to government leaders about sectarian violence that has gripped the predominantly Buddhist nation for more than a year. More than 240 people have been killed and 240-thousand others forced to flee their homes, many of them members of Myanmar's minority Rohingya Muslim community. But those taking part in Tuesday's protest carried anti-OIC banners and called for the organisation to stop interfering in Myanmar's internal affairs. The OIC team will travel on Friday to Rakhine state, scene of much of the violence, to meet with victims and visit crowded, rundown displacement camps.
