Georges Seurat - Eccentric Creator of Pointillism - Biographical Documentary

Born in 1859, into an affluent Parisian family, Georges Seurat may not be the most famous French artist of the 19th Century, but his paintings, meticulously crafted from tiny dots of pure colour were revolutionary, moving away from the open, emotional methods of the Impressionists to create something entirely new – pointillism. Seurat was fascinated by the science of optics and colour theory and unlike his more Bohemian contemporaries, carousing in the cafes and cathouses of Montmartre, he lived a quiet life and sought a rational, almost mathematical basis for his painting. In this biographical documentary Professor Graeme Yorston explores the short but colourful life of Georges Seurat, from his perspective as a psychiatrist to find out why even his friends thought him a little strange, and how his idiosyncratic personality influenced his art and made the whole art world think again… about… how we see things.
