She features a self-righting design, twin keels, and a Ljungström rig. Built using the foam sandwich construction method. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight. Duckworks Construction of Rudders: https://www.duckworksmagazine.com/07/... In this episode I build 2 rudder blades. A primary and a backup. I try the method from the above article first, but it doesn’t turn out so well. Through repairs I salvage that rudder. It will be my emergency spare rudder. Next I adapt the process a bit into the “Perry Method” and make an excellent blade on the 2nd attempt. This is my description of my method: I made a 270mm wide rudder blade. Mine is cut to make it balanced but of course you don't have to do that. Basically I epoxied 4mm ply onto a 95mm wide wood stringer set 30% of the way back from the leading edge. I also had a 20mm wide wood piece along the leading edge sandwiched between the ply. I used white oak but probably something lighter like spruce would be better. Once it cured I made a tube of carbon fiber and slid it in the trailing end all the way flush against the stringer and then epoxied the trailing edge closed with clamps. After that you shape the leading edge, fiberglass and paint! Pretty fast construction, and it makes a light and strong rudder blade. 💵 Donations to help build the boat: 👕 Buy a T-shirt!: bonfire.com/ocean-capable-small-sailboat-1 🟠 Patreon: / oceancapablesmallsailboat 🅿️ Paypal: https://paypal.me/perryOCSS 🛒 Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls... ₿ Bitcoin: bc1qryllpsf8putynvvsk246ur03yn5wsdrelpmwtg 👍 Facebook group: / 581818059568072 📷 Instagram: / oceancapablesmallsailboat 📧E-mail: [email protected] Opening music: The Showdown by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio Clair de Lune (Chill-Hop) by | e s c p | & Claude Debussy | https://escp-music.bandcamp.com Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
