Avascular necrosis of the hip is a condition that affect the hip or the femur. That is due to lack of load supply to the femoral head and it is an extremely painful condition and it is more seen in people where the blood supply for some reason, most of the times it is idiopathic, it is seen in these people who take steroids and also people who do deep diving. There is a spectrum of conditions that affect avascular necrosis of the hip. If it has been picked up in very early stage, the outcome of the treatment is extremely good and the prognosis is good, the traditional treatment of avascular necrosis of the hip is core drilling or even fibular bone grafts which is usually practised. At our hospital we advise them more advanced treatments in terms of injecting back the osteoprogenitor cells, what we call as the osteoblasts or the cells responsible for the bone healing. We do this by taking bone marrow from out and separate the cells that are responsible for bone healing. We grow the cells within the lab and reinject it back where there is poor blood supply. The success of their treatment is fairly significant and good in terms of the outcome.
