The weather was cold but calm, around 3°C / 37°F, giving Vienna a quiet and atmospheric start to the day. The area between Neubaugasse and Volkstheater runs through districts 6, 7 and 1, combining Vienna’s biggest shopping street with cultural landmarks and historic courtyards. Neubaugasse station opened in 1993 and serves as a key access point to Mariahilfer Straße, while Volkstheater station connects directly to the MuseumsQuartier and Vienna’s historic Ringstraße. Along the way we pass Café Ritter, a true Mariahilfer Straße institution that has been serving classic Viennese coffee culture since 1867. The busy intersection at Neubaugasse marks one of the most important shopping crossroads in the city. Eye catching graffiti adds contrast to historic façades, showing how street art has become part of Vienna’s modern identity. One of the highlights is the Haus des Meeres, translated as House of the Sea, which occupies a former World War II flak tower. Once built for air defense, it is now one of Vienna’s most popular aquariums and offers panoramic views over the city. Nearby you will also find the Vienna Retro Gaming Museum, a hidden gem for arcade and console fans. Cultural stops continue with IMAX Apollo Cinema, one of Vienna’s largest movie theaters, and Die Gruft, a long running organization providing emergency help for homeless people, especially during winter nights. Back on Mariahilfer Straße we see the Mariahilf Church, the Gerngroß shopping center, and the quiet elegance of Raimundhof, a preserved Biedermeier passage. A major construction site marks the former Leiner building, once owned by René Benko, now demolished and planned for a new development. The walk ends at the MuseumsQuartier, home to the Leopold Museum, mumok, and close views of the Natural History Museum and Volkstheater.
