Prof Chris Alden and Dr Dimitrios Stroikos of @LSEIDEAS discuss the international politics of outer space. With a growing number of state and non-state actors that are involved in space activities, there is a lot of debate around the democratisation of space, regulation of activities in space (and lack thereof), the role of science is space activities as well as space debris and its implications for the long-term sustainability of space activities. With the return of great power competition in space, one of the one of the biggest challenges is militarisation and weaponisation of space and cooperation between great powers in space. 00:00 - Intro 00:23 - Challenges underpinning the international politics of space 01:30 - State and non-state engagement in space activities 03:39 - How can we prevent the outbreak of conflict in space? 08:47 - Why do countries want to join the space race? 10:00 - The role of science in current space activities 11:31 - Space debris 13:39 - Cooperation and competition in space 🔴 Find out more about the LSE IDEAS Space Policy project: https://www.lse.ac.uk/ideas/projects/... 🔴 See how our social science research and expertise is helping us tackle some of the most pressing issues facing us today: https://www.lse.ac.uk/rftw 🔴 More from LSE: Home ➡️ http://www.lse.ac.uk/ TikTok ➡️ / lse Facebook ➡️ / lseps Instagram ➡️ / londonschoolofeconomics Twitter ➡️ / lsenews LinkedIn ➡️ / london-school-of-economics #space #politics
