Phillip Sear plays a 1908 piece—'Caresses'—by the short-lived Italian violinist and composer Alfredo d'Ambrosio (1871–1914). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Born in Naples, 'd'Ambrosio received his early training at the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella under Giuseppe Pinto (violin) and Enrico Bossi (composition), before advancing his studies with two of the most celebrated virtuosi of the age: Pablo de Sarasate in Madrid and August Wilhelmj in London. Following this international education, d'Ambrosio settled in Nice, where he established himself as a teacher, chamber musician, and leader of a well-regarded string quartet at rue de Russie 2; he subsequently moved to Paris, residing at Boulevard de Courcelle 71, where he spent his final years. His cousin Luigi d'Ambrosio was also a violinist and became the teacher of Salvatore Accardo. D'Ambrosio's compositional output was centred almost exclusively upon the violin, encompassing two full-scale concertos, numerous salon pieces for violin and piano, and a smaller quantity of chamber and operatic works. His first violin concerto in B minor, Op. 29, dedicated to Arrigo Serato, was composed between April and October 1903 and received its premiere in Berlin on 29 October 1904 with the Berlin Philharmonic under August Scharrer, in the presence of the Emperor. The second concerto in G minor, Op. 51, dedicated to Jacques Thibaud, was composed in 1912 and premièred on 6 April 1913 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris by Georges Enesco, conducted by the composer. Other notable works include the opera 'Pia de' Tolomei', performed in Nice in 1903, the ballet 'Ersilia' (also known as 'Hersilia'), a string quartet in C minor, Op. 42 (1908), and a string quintet. His extensive catalogue of violin-and-piano miniatures includes 'Sérénade' Op. 4, 'Canzonetta' Op. 6, 'Cavatine' Op. 13, 'Sicilienne' Op. 14, 'Berceuse' Op. 15, 'Aubade' Op. 17, 'Orientale' Op. 24, 'Aria' Op. 22, 'Tarentelle napolitaine' Op. 45, and 'Serenatella' Op. 50, many bearing dedications to celebrated contemporaries such as Kubelík and Thibaud. D'Ambrosio's most celebrated work is the 'Canzonetta' Op. 6 in G minor, first published in 1898, which he himself recorded on 78 rpm disc in 1907 and which was subsequently taken up by a distinguished succession of violinists including Alexander Petschnikoff (1914), Mischa Elman (1921), Toscha Seidel and Georg Kulenkampff (both 1924), and—in transcription—Eugene Ormandy. More broadly, his salon pieces were championed and performed by such luminaries as Sarasate, Heifetz, Elman, and Kreisler, testifying to the idiomatic quality and melodic appeal of his writing for the instrument. D'Ambrosio also made several recordings of his own compositions, including 'Chanson napolitaine' Op. 37, 'Humoresque' Op. 25, 'Ariette' Op. 23, and 'Romance' Op. 9, providing valuable documentary evidence of his performing style." (Perplexity AI, 20 February 2026). This piece, published in Nice, gives no indication of having been originally written for any instrument other than piano.
