Austin Police Officers Open Fire as Suspect Reaches for Firearm On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at approximately 12:40 a.m., officers with the Austin Police Department (APD) conducted a routine traffic stop in the 800 block of East Braker Lane. The vehicle, which had a female driver, a male passenger, and a young child in the backseat, was pulled over for failing to use a turn signal. During the stop, the male passenger — later identified as 26-year-old Branson Berreles — was asked to step out of the car after stating he had no identification. When officers attempted to conduct a pat-down, Berreles suddenly pushed through, fleeing on foot. As officers pursued, body-worn camera footage shows Berreles reaching toward his waistband. He then turned into a defensive stance and attempted to retrieve a firearm. At approximately 12:41 a.m., Officer Ryne Kirchberg and Officer Pitcher discharged their weapons, striking Berreles. Officers quickly approached, restrained him, and began life-saving measures. A firearm and multiple magazines were recovered from the suspect. Berreles was transported to a local hospital, where he is receiving treatment for his injuries. Charges are pending.
