"Shaman On The Moon" (2024) for large orchestra — Vincent Zhang

The Juilliard Orchestra, conductor; Jeffrey Milarsky Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, New York March 31, 2025 Program Note: Shaman on the Moon, true to its surreal title, tells the story of a Shaman performing rituals on the lunar surface, engaging with the cosmos and the moon in a mystical dialogue. The composition weaves together several musical ideas to depict these surreal scenes, including supernatural cosmic echoes, the Shaman’s chanting, and the dances of both the Shaman and the Moon, the latter responding to the Shaman's rituals. While the narrative is relatively straightforward, it is the musical approach that deserves attention. As someone who values vitality and seeks a youthful spirit in music, I centered this piece around dance elements. However, reflecting the restless energy of our modern world, I aimed to transcend typical dance music. Inspired by the "white noise" of our era, I stretched the perception of time through spectral lines, pulsating rhythms, and expansive sonorities. This approach creates a fresh interpretation of dance music, a balance between static textures and dynamic motion, embodying contemporary vitality. At the heart of the piece is the Latin text, “Lucem et Futura” (Light and Future), which appears both as a chant and at the climactic moment when the Shaman reaches the pinnacle of their ritual and dance. This phrase encapsulates humanity’s and an individual’s hope for light and a future. When earthly pursuits leave the ego unfulfilled, the warmth of light and the promise of new beginnings become the ultimate gifts, embodying prayers for transcendence and renewal. The Shaman serves as both a reflection of society and a representation of myself, dancing alone on barren ground, yearning for blessings. Ultimately, it is through imagination and sheer willpower that aspirations are fulfilled, and miracles are conjured from nothingness. — December 8, 2024 Vincent Zhang
