Life before moving to the Fluval Flex 123 litre (35 gallon) tank. My wife wanted to get an aquarium for my two year old son. We went to a local fish store for a look around. He sold us a 19 litre Boyu tank, said it could hold up to 8 goldfish. We got 5 goldfish. 2 months in and I realised the goldfish were getting bigger. After joining forums and educating myself watching videos on YouTube, I realised the 19litre tank was severely overstocked. I began sourcing for a bigger tank, at the same time doing daily water changes. All the fishes looked fine except for one of my red cap Orandas (we named Pebbles). I noticed Pebbles started swimming lesser and started lying at the bottom of the tank. The Fluval Flex 123 litre tank finally arrived and the fishes got the upgrade they needed. Though I transferred a small bag of filter media over from the previous tank, I knew it wasn't enough to sustain the new tank. Fish in tank cycling was done (the tank is doused daily with beneficial bacteria for a month). Realised that even after this upgrade, the tank remained overstocked. Got myself an API Freshwater Masterkit and finally got the water tested. After 2 weeks of trial and error, I came to find out that safe water parameters can be managed if I do an 80% water change daily. Ammonia and nitrite wasn't the issue, it was the nitrates that I had to manage. An Oase Biomaster 600 was later added (see my other videos) to boost bio filtration. 3 of the filtration trays were filled with Biohome Ultimate. A bag of Seachem De*nitrate is placed in one of the trays (Till date I am unable to ascertain if de*nitrate helps to reduce the nitrate levels). The bottom 2 and top tray are stock Oase sponges. Why stock sponges? I came across a website that did a test on the various types of filter media, the results stated that sponges actually provide more surface area for beneficial bacteria growth as opposed to other filter media like Biohome Ultimate. Why still put in Biohome Ultimate then? I actually paid about SGD$220 for 5KG of it.....those blood sucking capitalists! Update - 4April2022 I am glad to announce that Pebbles has regained its strength and is no longer seen lying at the bottom of the tank. Will make an updated video on Pebbles soon! Like what you see?
