The lantern fish, of the Myctophidae family, are perhaps the most common fish in all the oceans*, and yet we know little about them. They come from the middle depth of the deep sea and it has been estimated there are a billion metric tons of lantern fish in the world's oceans. They are so-called because they glow like lanterns, usually with a blue light, that shines out in the darkness of the deep. They can control their light organs (called photophores) , dotted around the whole body, with nerves and switch them on and off. They also have large patches of luminous tissue, often around the eyes and the tail, with different patterns for the 300 or so species. The bioluminescent light comes from bacteria which they culture within the organs, but they can control how much light escapes from these photophores. It's thought they use them to 1) counter illuminate their body against the lighter surface waters, making them invisible to prey, 2) as a signal between each other - deep sea explorer, William Beebe, noticed they responded to the light dots of his luminous watch dial and 3) as a blinding flash of light that puts off larger fish that want to eat them. Comes from trawl to about 1000ft off the coast of California, in the deep San Clemente trench. Comes more shallow at night with the vertical migration of plankton. Thought might be largely responsible for the deep scattering layer often seen on fish-finders. *Bristlemouth fish (Gonostomatidae) are sometimes said to be more numerous but it's not certain and they are in any case closely related. As well as the most numerous fish it makes them the most numerous vertebrate animal on the planet. They may be responsible for some of the climate of the world because of the carbon they contain and their massive numbers. Among the most accurate I have seen are these: https://amzn.to/2WpnxMO. That's an affiliate link and clicking it will give this channel a few cents so we can explore the sea together with future videos. They don't appear to be made from recycled plastic unfortunately but are quite small yet very interesting as a display.
