Zug Town Castle is a well-preserved historic sight in the City of Zug just like the old towers that were part of the old town wall. The origins of Zug Castle date back to around the 11th century, built by the Count of Lenzburg. In 1273, the Counts of Habsburg succeeded in acquiring all rights to the castle. On 14 November 1315, Duke Leopold gathered his army at Zug Castle before the Battle of Morgarten. After Zug joined the Confederation in 1352, the castle became private property and then served as a prestigious residence for Zug families. Since 1982 it has housed the cultural history museum of the city and canton of Zug. The Pulverturm Tower was built during the Reformation turmoil from 1522 to 1532 and was used to store gunpowder. The tower has an internal diameter of 8.50 metres. At the bottom, the wall thickness is 2.70 metres! The lower part of the tower can now be rented for holding a wide variety of events. The Huwilerturm Tower is said to have been built in 1524/25. Other sources give the year of construction as 1519 and name a master builder Huwiler as the builder. The tower's present name, however, does not come from this Huwiler, but from a later owner of the same name who came into possession of the tower in 1697. Access to the Huwilerturm was originally via the battlements of the city wall on the city side on the first floor. It was not until 1826 that the tower was given a ground floor entrance from the outside. The Knopfliturm Tower was built as a simple round tower around 1525. The wall thickness is about 2.7 metres at the bottom and recedes to about 2 metres at the top. The inner diameter is 6.3 metres, the outer almost 12 metres. The tower is said to have received its name from an owner of the ground. The town wall has been preserved to this day on both sides of the tower and has been partially incorporated into existing buildings. The Capuchin Tower stands at the north-east corner of the former fortification ring and is the highest of Zug's town towers. It was completed in 1526, as evidenced by the date on the door under the brick lucarna. The name Kapuzinerturm (Capuchin Tower), which is familiar in the present day, only became established later and is a reminder that members of the Capuchin Order lived in the monastery built next to it between 1595 and 1997. The walls of the tower reach a thickness of between 2.8 m at the bottom and 2.3 m at the top. Only a few remains of the city wall are still standing.
